This is the longest and most remote route to Mt. Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route. Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other game. The South Circuit is then followed, offering superb views of the Southern Icefields, past the Barranco Hut then on to Barafu and hence the summit. Descent is by the Mweka Route.

A party wishing to ascend slowly can comfortably take 8 days on this route as described below. However the campsite at Shira Hut and at Karanga Valley could be left out by a very strong party on request. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents which the porters will pitch for you. You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes and walking poles. This is a steep, tough trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas.

The Lemosho Route: is an unspoilt, remote, little used and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. It can either be used to gain the Western Breach route or followed by the Kibo South Circuit to ascend by the easier Barafu Route. The route is one of the few where groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger, as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other big game animals.

UMBWE ROUTE
A very strenuous walk up steep, slippery paths with many fallen trees to negotiate. The middle section follows a narrow spectacular ridge with magnificent views of the Great Barranco and Southern Icefields.

The Arrow Glacier/Western breach ascends is closed until further notice. Unfortunately four hikers were fatally injured (during December 2005) due to unpredictable rock falls on this ascend route. For the moment, please consider one of the other ascend routes which all offers an amazing experience. We will inform as soon as the route re-opens. Remember your safety is our main concern.

The Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. It is quite taxing, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful. Fewer people, pristine forest and shorter walking distances make it a great option for fit hikers. Add to your experience – OVERNIGHT IN THE CRATER!! Be one of a few fortunate people to spend a night in Africa’s largest volcano. This option is highly recommended, as this will be the only opportunity to get close to the beautiful and fascinating glaciers of Kilimanjaro and to be able to visit the ash pit.

RONGAI (OLOITOKITOK) ROUTE
This used to be the route used by the Outward Bound Mountain School at Oloitokitok in Kenya. The border is open during daylight hours but all park fees and arrangements must be made (via an agent) at the Marangu Gate before starting on the route. It is possible to arrange transport from Marangu to Naremoru / Rongai. Only a limited number of groups are allowed on the route at any time and it may not be used in descent. There are several big caves along the route, these are used by porters and tents should be carried. The “Outward Bound School” Hut is privately owned, no water or firewood in the vicinity. Allow 8 days for the traverse.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the crown of Tanzania. The view of this majestic mountain’s gigantic snow-capped summit dome, rising high above the surrounding savannah is one of Africa’s classic images. At 5895 meters (19,344ft), Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and one of the highest volcanoes in the world, attracting trekkers and climbers from every corner of the world. The attraction is even greater because with time and adequate preparation, it is possible to walk all the way to the summit without technical mountaineering equipment or experience.
The Kilimanjaro massif has two main peak areas: Kibo, the flat topped dome at the centre of the massif, and Mawenzi a group of jagged points and pinnacles on the eastern side. The top of Kibo dips inwards to form a crater which cannot be seen from below. Although Mount Kilimanjaro lies just three degrees south of the equator, both Kibo and Mawenzi have permanent caps of snow and ice.
The highest point on Kibo and the whole Kilimanjaro massif is Uhuru Peak. Also on Kibo is the slightly lower peak of Gillman’s Point, both are goals for most trekkers. The peaks of Mawenzi are for mountaineers only.
Kilimanjaro has been designated as a National Park by the government of Tanzania.

Starting on the southern side of the mountain at Umbwe gate, this is a fairly steep route and is recommended for the very fit or practiced trekker. Approach to the summit is via Barafu and Stella Point with descent being via Mweka. The Umbwe route holds its unique reputation with climbers across the world as being one of the most scenic and challenging routes on Africa’s highest mountain. It is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. Due to its very direct and steep approach, Umbwe offers very little acclimatization but its breathtaking scenery makes up for this two-fold. Not convinced yet? Let’s throw in an extra perk for you. An OVERNIGHT IN THE CRATER! Yes, through this route, you can be one of very few fortunate people to spend a night in Africa’s largest volcano. The Machame Route known as the “Whiskey” route, begins at Machame Gate, located at the southern base of the mountain, within its green, abundant rainforest. We climb to the Shira Plateau, then traverse the mountain beneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Icefield, before summiting from Barafu Hut. The total time on the mountain is 6 days.

The Machame route is a steep trail up Kilimanjaro and is generally done by climbers that are physically fit with some previous hiking experience. On the Machame Route your accommodation will be in tents with your meals served to you in your tents or if the weather is good, on a blanket outside.

Our trips begin and end at your lodge in Moshi, Tanzania. Clients may arrive at any time on day 1. There is a pre-trip meeting in the evening. With prior notice, private transfers from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to your lodge in Moshi can be arranged.

One day long in trek, climbing a natural, rather than manmade path, the Machame Route is a more demanding but much quieter and scenic route up the mountain. Overnights are spent camping in tents, which are carried and pitched by the accompanying porters. Kilimanjaro Climbing-Shira Route 8 Day Itinerary, this is the 8 days route approaches the summit from the west via Barafu camp and Stella Point, before descending via the Mweka Route and Millennium camp. We walk across an alpine plateau and pass through the caldera of Shira volcano and exploring the rock formations of the plateau.
The 8 days route gives a complete maximum time to acclimatization and also gives the perfect view of the glaciers on the crater rim, before joining with other routes and making the final ascent to the top.

The Shira Route is a little used trail that begins near Shira Ridge. It is nearly identical to the Lemosho route. In fact, Shira was the original route and Lemosho is the improved variation. Although Shira is a varied and beautiful route, it is less favorable than its successor due to the relatively high altitude of Shira’s starting point, which is accessed quickly by vehicle. It is possible that climbers will experience some altitude related symptoms on the first day while camping at 11,800 feet.

The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Shira Ridge. The vehicle bypasses the rain forest zone and the hiking trail begins on Shira Ridge. The Shira route crosses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. Then the route traverses underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route

Marangu route is the easiest and shortest route, Kilimanjaro’s summit and is known as the “coca cola” or “tourist” route. Marangu route is the only route in Kilimanjaro with the comforts of solar powered sleeping huts and comfortable beds at every camp.

The huts are communal. There are beds at both Mandara and Kibo huts and 120 beds at Horombo hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts.

This route is usually done in 5 days, but you can do it in 6 days for better acclimatization. You can spend your extra day resting at Horombo or climbing to a basecamp below Kibo’s sub peak Mawenzi. The Marangu route is also the easiest route and so no technical skill is required for the climb. During the trek you will be using the mountain huts which are situated along the route, the huts have all the basic necessities needed during the stay. Note that the extra night can be added at Horombo Hut for acclimatization if needed at extra cost.
