Common Emu is the second largest living bird (only after Ostrich) on earth. It is a flightless bird but runs up to 50 KM/hour (30 miles). They cannot walk backwards but it’s not known why?

It’s an omnivore and endemic to Australia (also found in Indonesia and Philippines). Some are kept in captivity in Kano Zoo, Nigeria, recently. It’s is the only bird species that has calf muscles.

Mating partners stay together for about 5 months but the eggs are incubated by the males for about 7 weeks without feeding, drinking or leaving the nest. The chicks are taken care of, by the males for about 4 months before they begin to feed themselves.

Apart from their roles as bio-indicators of the environment, birds could also be used as models to understand the dynamics of nature in terms of behavioral studies. For instance, the building of nest of two groups of birds — the Weavers and the Warblers is summarily discussed below:

For the Weavers, the males build their nest and the female chooses a male for mating based on the beauty of the nest built. Yes, the female chooses and get enticed on the basis of the architectural intelligence of the male. It takes them about 2 days to build a nest.

For the Warblers, the females build their nest — unlike the Weavers. The males may accompany the females or protect the nest, but they don’t help them in building the nest. It takes them about 4 days to build a nest.

The Friendly ‘Cattle Egret’ General Africa Facts

The friendly cattle egrets are migratory birds and found all over the world. Their population is currently increasing, hence they are ‘least concern’ in the IUCN list of species.

Though, named after cattle, which they follow around, they also follow other grazing herbivores in grassland, savanna and woodland vegetations. They feed majorly on insects, but also eat lizards, frogs and worms. They exhibit a symbiotic feeding relationship with cattle and other grazing herbivores known as ‘mutualism’.

As the cattle graze along the vegetation, their movement raises insects to fly around which the egrets  feed on as an advantage. On the other hand, the egrets helps the cattle by eating up flies that are pecking on their skin, including ticks which sucks the blood of the cattle. Since both egrets and cattle benefit in the process, such association is termed ‘mutualism’.

The ‘stinkbird’ General Africa Facts

Leaves are made of cellulose, and cellulose is difficult to digest. Leaf eaters have to load up with bacteria to help digest this tough material. Hardly any birds eat leaves as the fermentation process will make them too heavy to fly, but some birds have — like the hoatzin, of South America. Like cattle that have a fermentation stomach, this bird also has a lot of digesting bacteria, but it stores this helpful colony in its large oesophagus and crop (throat area). It takes about 2 days for a leaf to work through the body and the end result is manure-like droppings/dung, giving it the name of ‘stinkbird’.

Before the trip

Please familiarize yourself with the safety risks, health and travel recommendations of the destinations you visit. For the most up to date information contact your foreign office in your home country for advice. For reference, you can also visit the WHO advice page on the novel coronavirus pandemic and the official advice of your local government of health authority.

Travel advice is non-binding.  You are always responsible for your travel choices and decisions.

We strongly recommend taking comprehensive travel insurance before you travel.

Before the trip: There is no travel warning, can I still travel? 

Our local agencies will execute the trip as they have planned it with you. You can always reach out to them in case you have questions or concerns.

At the moment that you are not willing to travel to the planned destination, you can also contact your local agency. In most cases, our local agencies will be open to postpone or rebook your trip to another destination.

Before the trip: A travel warning has been issued, what happens with my booking?

The situation with Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) and its impact on political borders and movement are unprecedented. As a result, we are reviewing all cancelations on a case-by-case basis. 

We are as flexible as possible with postponements, re-bookings and change of destinations, however, most cancelations will incur charges in line with the cancelation policies of your bookings.

I am already traveling in the destination, what do I need to know?

If there is an outbreak in your destination, please follow the advice of your local authorities.

We recommend you to review the recommendations of the WHO and your local health authority on basic safety measures and precautions for your destinations.

Please familiarize yourself with the details of your travel insurance policy, in particular, the contact details in the event of a medical emergency..

In the case of repatriation (when you must return home during your trip), because of a medical-accident or sickness, travel insurance should kick in and you should directly contact your providers.

When you wish to interrupt your trips and return home without a medical reason, you should also contact your insurance providers. 

Postponement & Change of booking

How can I postpone my trip?

The Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID 19) has brought us a lot of unprecedented circumstances that are beyond our control. It has affected and spread in every corner of the world. It got all of us unaware and made us go through some uncontrollable conditions.

In case you want to postpone your trip, please contact us. Let us know that you intend to travel later and, if you already know a time frame, also inform us about your newly planned travel dates. We will check the bookability of your trip and confirm the itinerary or any needed changes (e.g. due to seasonality).

We are grateful to all those who have rescheduled their safaris to 2021 and 2022. These give hope to our safari operations, tour staff, and a long chain of all our suppliers. We request all those thinking to cancel, that we humbly request that you keep your booking and reschedule to 2021. You are given a Year from the time your safari to start, to choose a date in between to rebook your safari.

Can I move my trip to another destination?

Moving your trip involves canceling your current trip and re-booking another. Cancelation fees would apply. The remaining amount would be refunded in travel credit. Changes are allowed and we will provide you with new itinerary.

If no travel warning has been issued for your travel destination and the itinerary has not been significantly affected by the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19), travelers wishing to cancel a booking are subject to standard cancellation policies and fees. 

There is undoubtedly no determined end in sight of the COVID-19 pandemic although global efforts to find vaccine(s) and develop guidelines on how to live with the Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) have picked momentum.

Our answer is YES. Kenya has been listed among the 80 global destinations certified and authorized to use the “World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) “Safe Travel Stamp” after the destination’s adopted the global COVID-19 health and hygiene standardized protocols.

This stamp allows for the recognition of Kenya as a viable holiday safari destination subject to the implementation of the health and safety protocols.

Jamboree Africa Tours and Safaris (JATS) has adopted tourism and hospitality protocols on health and safety to mitigate the effects of the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic and taken responsibility of ensuring that destination Kenya is safe for tourism business.

Protocols for Jamboree Africa offices & staff:

1. All our core staff have valid covid-19 free certification not more than14 days old from a recognized government approved facility at the first time and subsequently maintain the Coronavirus Pandemic (Covid-19) prevention guidelines prescribed by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and relevant agencies.
2. We have provided approved facemasks, hand sanitizers/hand washing facility with running water and soap at the entrance and at other strategic locations in the premises which   are hygienically operated.
3. We have provided contactless thermometer for body temperature check at the entrance for both staff and visitors.
4. Have documented Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for guest Management line with these protocols and MOH’s Coronavirus Pandemic (Covid-19) preventive guidelines as appropriate.
5. We have created and will maintain a register of all staff & drivers.
6. All staff have been instructed to wash or sanitize hands their before and immediately after entering the work premises, after changing into uniforms, after using lockers and frequently while on shift, particularly after touching items or surfaces.
7. All our staff offices have provision for adequate ventilation and maximized via wide openable windows.
8. We have provided visible notices / signages and other sensitization information at the strategic locations/entrance on Coronavirus Pandemic (Covid-19) preventive measures, screening, frequent hand washing and sanitization and mandatory wearing of face masks.
9. We have a Guest/visitors register shall be kept and updated daily and include mobile contact & physical address for ease in contact tracing.
10. We have Integrated technologies to enable automation, such as online, mobile payment and discouraged cash payments.
11. Our wide office doors shall be left/wedged open to reduce surface touching or porters/security shall be deployed to open doors to limit their touching of surfaces.
12. We have provided separate waste bins in each office and at strategic locations and appropriate method for collection and storage of used PPEs to ensure hygienic waste disposal with minimum contact.
13. We have a documented list of emergency contacts, reporting system and evacuation procedures for any arising health related incidents at our offices.
14. We have developed office staff work schedules and shifts and provided the option of working from home for some of our staff.
15. All our public facilities (kitchen, washrooms, lobby/lounge etc) shall adhere to social distancing, frequent cleaning and disinfection and provided with adequate supply of hand washing and sanitizing facilities. Staff have been trained on the same.
16. We have developed cleaning procedures with appropriate disinfectants/sanitizers focusing on guest’s body, luggage, travel documents and high-frequency touch points/surfaces.
17. Office gadgets/equipment headsets, personal computers, desks, telephones are dedicated to one staff member.
18. Guest/visitors register shall be kept and updated daily and should include mobile contact & physical address for ease in tracing. Whenever possible, minimize walk-in clients and encourage online bookings.
19. We will maintain records of sanitized areas/surfaces, detergents used and personnel involved in cleaning and sanitization process.

Protocols for airport transfers, excursions & safari operations:

1. We will ensure that all our safari transfer vehicles are properly cleaned and sanitized during and after each trip/ transfer.
2. We will Provide packed lunches for long drive to avoid unnecessary stop-overs.
3. We shall ensure drivers and guides use suitable communication gadgets for vehicles carrying more than 7 passengers to communicate with guest to avoid turning or shouting to enable them to be heard by guests.
4. We will maintain a register of clients transported or who have interacted with the tour guides.
5. We shall ensure our safari / transfer vehicles are sanitized before the start of each trip and this will include cleaning and disinfecting of all surfaces (handrails, door handles, seats etc.) at regular times in the course of trip.
6. Particular attention shall be given to luggage disinfection before and after handling.
7. We shall encourage open windows when weather permits, to allow air circulation in all our safari and transfer vehicles.
8. We will limit the number of staff accompanying guests in every trip – only one driver guide per vehicle.
9. We shall ensure information provided (like tourist map) is stuck on the back of the chairs of the vehicle to minimize contact.
10. Only the driver guide will be permitted to open doors for the clients to minimize touching contaminated surfaces where applicable. The driver shall sanitize the doors before and after opening/closing.
11. We will endeavor to educate office staff, driver guides and customers about their shared responsibility to help protect each other in a Coronavirus Pandemic (Covid-19) environment.
12. Maintain appropriate and reliable list of emergency contacts for rapid assistance in case of health and safety related instances. This list will be stuck in each of our safari/transfer vehicles.
13. We will educate and encourage our guests to minimize /avoid paying using cash at restaurants, curio shops e.t.c. Online, Mobile payment or credit/debit cards encouraged.
14. Disposable approved & quality facemasks and sanitizers shall be made available in the vehicle for use at all times.
15. Our drivers shall not be allowed to make stopover at any other place apart from the prearranged designated point or areas.
16. All our vehicles shall carry a capacity that ensures social distancing between guests travelling together. Land cruisers and similar vehicles the carrying capacity shall not exceed 7 passengers.
17. Jamboree Africa Tours and Safaris will only choose partners that are confirmed to comply with existing Government directives for the safe handling of their guests. This includes but is not limited to hotels, airlines, boats e.t.c.
18. Any provided water bottles or items shall be labelled with each guest name to avoid sharing or use by another.
19. Binoculars and cameras shall not to be shared and shall be sanitized regularly.
20. Families, tour groups and couples shall be allocated to a specific vehicle and a guide for the duration of their stay to minimize exposure to other guests and guides.

Flights To East Africa / Quarantine Procedures

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Kigali International Airport are set to open up on 1st Aug 2020. This brings hope to us as we anticipate to receive you back to East Africa for your endless amazing safaris. But again all these depend on guidelines set by the different individual airlines, airports, and countries. Tanzania opened its airport and are accepting international flights. Ethiopian Airways announced they start Tanzania flights on 1st June 2020.

When Land You land in any East African destination, you will be required to produce a 14 days COVID 19 – Coronavirus Pandemic Negative Certificate to show you are free from Corona Virus. You will be subjected to mandatory temp testing at the airports, and when confirmed negative, you will be allowed to continue with your safari, if you are positive, you will be quarantined for 14 days at your own cost.

Please Note, Rwanda has a Mandatory 14 days Quarantine procedure when you land in.

Kenya resumed its flight operations to various countries in the world. Its also receiving flights from various destinations listed on the government website www.kaa.go.ke.

Tanzania is opened too and accepting flights from all over the world.

Uganda remains closed now with no flights accessing the country at the moment. We will keep you updated on any developments.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Kenya?

This is a very important question that does not have a
simple, direct answer. The reason being, Kenya has such an abundance of
wildlife and such diverse activities that you can find something to enjoy at
any one time of the year!

So, the best time to visit Kenya depends on what you want to
see or do in Kenya, and how much you are willing to pay.

Also, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. You might
enjoy the crowds and adrenaline of the great migration, while another traveler
prefers the quiet, rainy months when parks are almost deserted.

That said- we know you are looking for specifics. Here is a
rundown of what you might expect at different times of the year:

Kenya in January – March

This is a ‘high’ season in Kenya; the perfect time for
luxury Kenya safari packages. January to March is characterized by hot, humid
days and relatively warm nights.

It is the best times to visit Kenya. There will be fewer
crowds than later in the year, minus the wetness that soon follows this period.
It is a good time to do those out of the box activities such as game drives on
horseback.

Kenya in April – June

This is the ‘low season’ Kenya holiday season. Lodges and
camps will be at their cheapest meaning it is the best time for a budget Kenya
safari.  It is also the season of long
rains.

The grass will be green, and animals will be abundant, so if
you don’t mind some rain. this might be a good time to visit Kenya.

Some lodges/camps prefer to close down for renovations at
this time of the year. Please check with us if your favorite lodge will be
open.

Kenya in July – September

The rainy season gives way to a cool July and relatively
warm August. This is the most popular game-viewing period in Kenya, courtesy of
the great wonder of the world, the wildebeest migration.

Suffice to say that the Masai Mara will be quite crowded
this time of the year. Although the migration is the show stopper this time of
the year, don’t forget to visit other areas of the country as well.

Kenya in October – December

Another green season when things slow down a bit, including
the Kenya safari cost! New calves will be in abundance, and there will be short
showers.

November will be a quiet month before the holiday season
begins and you can easily bag a cheap safari package.

It can be a dream to spend Christmas and New Year in the
bush with those you love. So go for it!

Kenya Safari Cost – Low And High Season Kenya Tours

You have probably come across the term ‘high and low Kenya
holiday season’. What this means is that there months when safaris in Kenya are
expensive and months when they are cheap.

For example, the Masai Mara wildebeest migration takes place
between July-October every year. This period is the most expensive time to
visit Kenya.

Also, Kenya safari tours that correspond with major national
holidays in Kenya such as Christmas, Easter holiday, New Year holiday will be
more expensive.

On the other hand, April to June is the official ‘low
season’ in Kenya. It is the best time to plancheap Kenya tours.

The Destination in Your Kenya Tour Itinerary

The destinations included in your Kenya tour package have a
direct influence on the total cost of your Kenya tour.

For example, skydiving in Diani beach costs anything from
$350, but an expedition to Wasini Island costs less than $120.

Masai Mara National reserve charges $80 in entrance fees to
non-residents, but other national parks charge as low as $30 and so on.

Mode of Transport – Flight vs Road Safaris

After flying into Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International

What Should I Pack For A Kenya Safari – Clothing And Toiletries?

What you should pack for your Kenya safari depends on where
you are going and the kind of activities you plan to do. Here are some of the
things you should pack forunforgettable Kenya tours.

Safari Clothing

One tip for packing clothes is to bring pieces that are
versatile. Remember, there are baggage limits, especially if you will be taking
small connecting flights. Bring clothes that can be worn multiple times
(sweaters/jackets/trousers) and those that can easily be paired off.

Consider the weather- if you are visiting Kenya between
April- June, it will be raining. As such, pack a rain jacket, a sweater,
trousers, and boots. It helps if they are in darker colors that won’t show dirt
as quickly.

Regardless of what you have heard, it gets quite chilly in
the mornings and evenings, so carry a warm sweater and scarf for that.

For warmer times of the year, carry light, long-sleeved
t-shirts, and trousers/ shorts. Long sleeves are essential as mosquitos, and

You want to bring something smart for dinner or a night out.
For ladies,a dress/ skirt or trousers that can be paired easily with a top will
do. Men should carry pants and at least one long-sleeved shirt.

Toiletries and First Aid Kit

While some safari lodges might provide some bathroom
essentials, it is always best to pack what you think you will need throughout
your safari in Kenya. Alternatively, you can buy these things once in Kenya.

What to Pack for your Safari Trips in Kenya – Gadgets

Well, it’s a bit of a cliché to include gadgets on a safari
packing list. This is because we imagine one goal of an African safari is to
get away from it all; be one with nature. For this reason, we plan to limit the
gadget to the most necessary?

Camera/ Video Camera

It goes without saying that you must bring a camera to
record all the awesome sights you will see on your Kenya holiday.

Do not forget to carry the battery charger and a couple of
extra memory cards. Imagine chancing on a hunt only to find your memory card
full! Finally, carry an extra battery- in case the camera dies on you far away
from the lodge and electricity!

Phone

Your phone is essential, but please don’t be glued to it all
the way. Ensure that you get a local sim card (cheapest option) or set it to
roaming. Please note that most national parks will have bad reception, but you
can make your calls once you are back to the lodge.

Laptop

If you can’t wait to share the excitement of your Kenya
safari tours with your family back home or with your social media followers,
then do bring a laptop. Again, use it sparingly, and don’t spend more time on
it that you need to. It is also useful for transferring photos when you have
limited memory on your camera/phone.

What to Pack for your Kenya Holiday – Money

While you might have paid for your Kenya safari package in
advance, you will need to carry some pocket money with you. This is useful to
buy on the spot souvenirs, tips, and phone credit.

The easiest currency to bring is USD.

You can convert this to Kenya Shillings at the airport, or
your local guide can show you a trusted forex bureau. Ensure that you get small
denomination notes.

You can also withdraw cash from numerous ATM’s located in
towns, but once you get to the remote areas, these will be scarce.

It is not advisable to carry large amounts of money in your
person during your trip. Carry only what is necessary for use during the day.

What to Pack for your Kenya Holiday – Kenya Travel Documents

The mostessential travel document is your passport. Ensure
that you have a digital copy of it stored online, as well as a physical copy.

You can keep the original in the safe provided in your lodge.
Do the same for other important documents such as air tickets, insurance
certificates, and credit cards.

What to Pack for your Kenya Holiday -Miscellaneous Items

Other items that you will find useful in your Kenya safari
tour include binoculars, a wide-brimmed hat, day bag, a book or kindle, a board
game if you are traveling with children and protective waterproof bags for your

How Much Is A Masai Mara Safari?

The price of a Masai Mara safari depends on when you are
visiting and where you are staying.

The cheapest time to visit the Masai Mara is April- June,
and November. This is called the ‘low season.’ April sees the onset of rains,
and there is little activity at the park. Some hotels close down for
renovations at this time.

The most expensive time to visit the Masai Mara is
July-October. This is the ‘peak season’ dictated by the onset of the great
wildebeest migration. This is the busiest time at the park, and lodges/ camp
will charge top dollar. Even then, the wildebeest migration is a once in a
lifetime experience and worth every penny!

That said- the actual amount you will for a Kenya Masai mara
safari depends on where you stay. If you choose a budget camp in the low
season, you can get away with paying $90-$150 per day.

A mid-range lodge at the same time will set you back
anywhere from $200-$300 while a luxury camp will charge upwards of $500.

In the high season, however, these prices will quickly
double, and other factors such as your mode of transport and duration of stay
will drive the cost higher.

The Best Places To Stay During a Safari in Kenya

Accommodation is one of the most important factors to
consider when planning safaris in Kenya. I mean, after a day out in the
Savannahs looking for the Big 5 or walking in the white sands of Diani Beach,
you should come home to a cozy place.

If you are on a strict budget, opt for camping or budget
tented camps. Also, cottages and Villas are within our Kenya Budget Safari
price of $150 per person sharing per day.

Mid-Luxury accommodation goes for anything from $180 per
person sharing per night to $300 per person sharing per night. In our opinion,
mid-luxury safari trips in Kenya offer the perfect balance between cost and the
classic African safari experience of the 1920s.

Luxury and super luxury Kenya safari packages come with all
the trims, but they can easily set you back up to $1500 per person depending on
the season.

If you are on a honeymoon safariin Kenya you might want an
exclusive tent; special candlelit dinners or private game drives. This will
cost more.

While traveling with children is not typically a special
circumstance, but some camps and safari lodges require that you reserve private
transport (when traveling with children).

What Animals Can You See On A Kenyan Safari?

Kenya boasts some of the best game viewing opportunities in
the world. Whether you are in a big game reserve such as the Masai Mara or in
one of the smaller Kenya safari parks,you will see a lot of animals.

These are some of the animals you can expect to see during
safari trips in Kenya.

The big 5 (lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo, leopard) – fun
fact- did you know they are called the ‘big 5’ because they are the most
dangerous especially when wounded, and not because they are the biggest?

Others are cheetahs, giraffes, monkeys, numerous bird

months, you do not want to fall sick in the middle of your trip. As a rule of
thumb, the best place to start is at your doctor’s office, it doesn’t hurt to
check and confirm that you are in tip top shape for such a trip.

The two most important vaccines/precautions that you require
for Kenya are:

• Yellow Fever
• Malaria

Unfortunately, Kenya falls on Yellow Fever and Malaria
‘belts’. This means that the two diseases are prevalent in some areas,
especially in the hot months.

Both diseases are spread by the female anopheles mosquito
and are not spread by touch or exchange of fluids.

For Yellow Fever, there is a vaccine that lasts up to
10years. You should have this vaccine done at least 10 days before you travel
to make sure that it has kicked in as you arrive.

Should I Take Malaria Pills For Kenya?

Yes. There is no vaccine for Malaria yet and you are advised
to consult your doctor on the best anti-malarial tablets for you.

As a precaution while on safari make sure that you use
repellant at all times, and wear long-sleeved t-shirts/ long trousers while
outside, especially in the evenings.

Kenya Climate: When is the best time to visit Kenya

Kenya climate varies across the country, from the tropical humidity of the coast, the dry heat of the savannah or semi-arid areas and the cool air of the highlands. Temperatures in these areas are fairly constant year round with an average of 27°C (80°F) at the coast, 21°C to 27°C (70°F to 80°F) in the hinterland, while in Nairobi and the highlands over 5,000 ft, the daytime temperatures normally range between 19°C and 24°C (66°F to 75°F).

Most parts of the country experience two rainy seasons. ‘Long rains’ falls over a ten week period between April and June, whereas the ‘short rains’ over a five week period between November and December. The rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short and heavy tropical downpour.

Rain may occasionally fall outside of the normal rainy seasons. In the highland areas north of Nairobi it may get chilly at night or in the early mornings – especially June, July, August when temperatures are cooler – so it is recommended that visitors pack some items of warm clothing.

Respecting wildlife When Staying at Camps/Lodges

Important Wildlife Safety Tips:The wild animals are not like those found in theme parks – they aren’t tame. Most of the safari camps are unfenced and dangerous animals can (and do!) wander through the camps. Many of the animals and reptiles you will see are potentially dangerous. Attacks by wild animals are rare. However, there are no guarantees that such incidents will not occur. None of the Wilderness Safaris group of companies, their staff members, associates, agents, or their suppliers can be held liable for any injuries caused during an incident involving the behaviour of wild animals.

Observe the Following wildlife Safety precautions if Possible:

• Please listen to the camp staff and guides. The wildlife safety precautions need to be taken seriously, and strictly adhered to. Don’t go wandering off on your own without a guide – even to your rooms. After retiring to your rooms at night, don’t leave them.
• Observe animals silently and with a minimum of disturbance to their natural activities. Loud talking on game drives can frighten the animals away.
• Never attempt to attract an animal’s attention. Don’t imitate animal sounds, clap your hands, pound the vehicle or throw objects.
• Please respect your driver-guide’s judgment about proximity to lions, cheetahs and leopards.
• Don’t insist that he take the vehicle closer so you can get a better photograph. A vehicle driven too close can hinder a hunt or cause animals to abandon a hard-earned meal.
• Litter tossed on the ground can choke or poison animals and birds and is unsightly.
• Never attempt to feed or approach any wild animal on foot. This is especially important near lodges or in campsites where animals may have become accustomed to human visitors.
• Refrain from smoking on game drives. The dry African bush ignites very easily, and a flash fire can kill animals.

WALKING IN PARKS AND RESERVES;

You will walk where possible but this is often determined by the local area and country regulations.

NOTE: Walking is at your own risk as these walks can take you close to dangerous wild animals.

The following are some guidelines you should follow while on a safari:

What equipment do you need?

What are the Do’s for perfect safari photo? Particularly if you have a new camera, or if you don’t use your camera frequently, try to spend some time before you depart for your African safari holiday familiarising yourself with the camera, and taking some practice shots.  Any subject matter will do, such as birds in your garden, your pets, or anything else that moves.

Also, have you read the manual?  They are not great reads admittedly, but when you get on a safari drive, it helps to quickly know how to operate the camera.  You will not have time to read the manual as animal behaviour unfolds in front of you – the action will be over by the time you have found the right page and read it!

Ideally you want to be able to make key adjustments to your camera (eg. Exposure settings) without lifting your eye from the viewfinder.

Be patient! –Do’s for perfect safari photo

When it comes to observing wildlife on a safari trip, no two days are the same.  Some days you will see very little while others there will appear to be animals everywhere.  Some people rush around trying to ‘tick off’ as many different animals as possible, taking a quick picture or two before asking to move on.  But unfortunately animals will not pose for you on demand, and professional photographers will spend many hours with a subject waiting to get a great shot.  On a typical safari this isn’t really possible but you will often find that if you show a little patience and stay with a subject a little longer, something more interesting might happen that you can get a shot of.  This advice is equally true for general game viewing not just photography.  Try and be patient, spend some time with and get to know your subject, and often you will be rewarded.  If nothing else it makes for a more relaxing safari!

Light

The most atmospheric and inspiring nature photography tends to benefit from great light.  This is often referred to as the ‘golden light’ that occurs in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky.  At this time your photos will benefit from a softer warmer ‘golden’ light. During the middle of the day the sun is overhead and tends to result in harsh shadows that rarely provide for flattering pictures.  During the ‘golden hours’ animals also tend to be more active as it is cooler, increasing the chances of not only seeing wildlife but catching them doing something more interesting than sleeping in the shade!  Now you know why we get you up so early on a morning!

Techniques –Do’s for perfect safari photo

Composition – the “Rule of thirds”

A really important aspect of good wildlife photography is composition.  This relates to the position of the subject(s) within the frame.  The “rule of thirds” is a well known compositional technique that can make a big difference to the impact of your photos and require little if any technical skills.

If you think about your picture frame being broken down into thirds (both horizontally and vertically) so that you have 9 parts, the best wildlife photographers often deliberately place the subject at the points where the lines cross, or along the lines themselves.  Most of the time your photos become more aesthetically pleasing to the human eye by applying the rule of thirds.

Don’t forget your environment

Often when you have long telephoto lens the temptation is to fill the frame with your subject at every opportunity.  This can provide for great portrait photos and you will see some wonderful wildlife photographs that use this approach.  But sometimes, it is good to pull back a little on your telephoto lens and try to take in some of your subject’s environment.  The African bush has some wonderful landscapes and trying to incorporate some of this into your photographs will enhance your photo collection and give your friends and family a sense of what the African bush actually looks like.  If you always fill the frame with your subject they will never know!

You can also be creative in the opposite sense, by getting really close up shots of a lion’s eye, or an elephant’s trunk, for example.

Try to capture some action.

In addition to capturing portraits of your favourite safari animals try and add some variety to your photo collection by capturing some action.  Most African wildlife are social creatures and will spend some of their time playing, grooming each other or interacting in other ways.  Capturing these moments will make your photographs more interesting as you will be capturing their behaviour.  As explained above, while this often requires a bit of patience (particularly with sleepy lions!) the rewards can be well worth it.

Stay low!

One of the most underrated techniques for capturing great wildlife photography is to position yourself for a low angle of view.  Many safari vehicles are fitted with pop up or removable roofs to allow people to stand up and see wildlife from a higher position.  This can be advantageous, for example when an animal is in longer grass.  But taking a picture of an animal that is close by to your vehicle and sat down, while you are stood shooting downwards is generally not the most flattering.  You will get a much more impactful picture by photographing sat down to get a lower angle of view – by getting eye level to your subject.

Portraiture and depth of field

If you’re trying to capture a close up view of a single subject focus on getting the eyes pin sharp, and try and get a diffused (blurred) background.  This requires careful use of depth of field – a shallower depth of field (helped by using a lower ‘f’ stop) will help blur the back ground and make your subject stand out in the photo.  The downside is that the shallower depth of field that helped blur the background will also narrow the area of sharpness often to just a few inches – hence be careful to focus on the eyes as they may be the only ‘pin sharp’ element of the picture.

On a related point, when looking at your subject through the viewfinder often we forget to look at distractions above, below and to the side of the subject.  Odd looking twigs, other safari vehicles in the background and other ‘clutter’ can often weaken a picture but can often be avoided by moving very slightly the position from which you take the picture.  Try and get as clean and uncluttered surrounding to your subject as possible so it stands out in the frame.

Shutter speed

To freeze the movement of a moving animal you will need to keep the shutter speed high, ideally around 1/1000 of a second or higher depending on the speed of movement and the actual subject.  For example, trying to freeze a bird in flight will require much higher shutter speeds.  An alternative approach is to use the panning technique where you try to follow the movement of the animal so it stays sharp in the picture but the background is blurred.  For this try somewhere between 1/8 to 1/30 second shutter speed.

And finally – try to take pictures in both portrait and horizontal orientation.  And to give the appearance of the animal moving, don’t centre your shots. Leave space left, right, above or below for the animal to move into. We hope our Do’s for perfect safari photo
